3 Extra-Credit Spring Cleaning Tasks

Spring cleaning can be downright dirty, but it’s worth tackling the hard jobs now so you can start the season off sparkling and fresh. Here are three tasks where going the extra mile makes a big difference.

Deep-clean carpets

Even if you keep your carpets clean and vacuumed year-round, it’s a good idea to deep clean them every few months. It will help maintain the life of the carpet and keep it looking bright.

You can call in a professional to have carpets cleaned, but for a fraction of the cost, try Capture Cleaning Powder. This product is available online and in some larger hardware stores. You’ll want to read the directions carefully, but here’s the basic process.

  1. Spritz Capture Soil Release Pre-Mist spray uniformly over your carpet.
  2. Shake a light layer of Capture Carpet & Rug Dry Cleaner powder over your carpet, almost like a fine layer of snow.
  3. Using a bristle brush, very gently massage the cleaning powder into the pile of your rug. The key to this step is to rub gently. Rugs are often made of delicate fibers, so it’s important to use a light touch so you don’t make your carpet frayed and frizzy.

Allow the carpet powder to sit undisturbed for the recommended amount of time (typically 10 to 20 minutes), then vacuum up all the cleaning powder. Make sure you’re very thorough with this step to collect all the powder.

Soak bed linens

linens

This task isn’t necessarily on everyone’s spring cleaning list, but it goes a long way toward freshening your home.

  1. Fill your bathtub with a hearty mixture of warm water and a product such as OxiClean.
  2. Soak all sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers according to the product’s directions.
  3. Dry the bed linens with dryer sheets to make everything feel extra clean and bright when you make your bed again.

This is also be a perfect opportunity to wash mattress covers, dry clean down comforters and pillow inserts, and even flip mattresses.

Clean out and restock closets

If your local weather allows, get ready to transfer winter clothing into storage, and move spring and summer clothing into circulation. Pull out clothing you no longer wear, and donate or discard it.

Dry clean coats and sweaters before putting them away for next winter, and send boots and shoes to the cobbler for polishing and re-soling before putting them away for the season, too.

Finally, wash and iron all spring and summer clothes so they’re ready to wear when you want them.
